Most of Philadelphia’s historic sites are open every day, 9am to 5pm, with free admission.

To reach most historic sites, take the trolley east to 30th Street Station. (See Transportation section below)

Transfer (free) to the Market-Frankford Subway Elevated (El) east and get off at 5th Street.

• Complete tour of City Hall including visits to the Mayor’s Reception Room, City Council Chambers, Supreme Court Room, etc.

• Walk through the oldest and largest working outdoor market in the country and see butchers, bakers, and pasta makers.

• Take trolley east (toward Center City) to 30th Street. Transfer to the El east and get off at 8th Street. Transfer to #47 Bus and go to 8th and Washington Ave. Walk over to 9th Street.

• Features a variety of ships, museums, and restaurants. A great place to just sit and relax.

• Take trolley east (toward Center City) to 30th Street. Transfer to the El east and get off at 2nd St.

• Take the #38 bus from the corner of 40th & Spruce Sts. to Girard Ave. and walk two blocks to 34th St.

• To reach the Sports Complex, take the trolley to 15th Street Station.

• Transfer to Broad Street Line (Southbound) to Pattison Ave. or Sports Complex.

• The home field for the Philadelphia Eagles football team. The famous “Army/Navy” football game takes place here.

• Both sports arenas host the Philadelphia Flyers, the Philadelphia 76ers’, various concerts, the circus, ice shows, and other sporting events.

• The home field for the Philadelphia Phillies.

• Thirty-two other college libraries are available to our students through the University’s membership in a local consortium (TCLC). These include Widener, West Chester, Rosemont, St. Joseph’s, Rowan, and 26 others. (Penn does not belong to TCLC) To use these libraries and borrow materials from them, stop at the J. W. England Library during the day and pick up a letter of introduction. In addition, our users have full access to the Hagerty Library at Drexel.

• Take the #40 bus from the corner of 40th & Spruce Sts. and get off at 4th St.

• Trains servicing most major cities in the United States depart from 30th Street Station.
• Take the trolley east to 30th Street, walk to 30th Street Station.

• Located at 10th and Filbert Streets, Greyhound-Trailways and Peter Pan service most cities and towns in PA, DE and NJ and throughout the United States.

• Take the trolley east to 30th Street, transfer to the Market Frankford Elevated (El), take the El east to 11th and Market Streets, walk one block east to 10th and Market Streets, make a left on 10th and walk to Filbert.

Trains run from 16th & Locust Streets to Lindenwold NJ.

• Take the trolley east to 15th Street, walk south to 16th & Locust Streets.

• Public Transportation in Philadelphia and the surrounding area is operated by SEPTA. At present fares are $2.00 (cash) or $1.30 with tokens. Tokens are available at USP Bookstore, 30th & Market Street Station, 13th & Market Street Station and Market Street East at 11th & Market Streets. Please note exact fare is required.

• Running north and south through the City is the Broad Street Subway. The Market-Frankford Subway Elevated (known as the El) runs east and west. Transfer between them is free at the 15th Street Station (City Hall) and at 30th Street Station. (It’s easier for beginners to change at the 30th Street Station.) To get to Center City from the campus, take any of the subway surface lines (trolleys) running east. You may board them on either Chester Avenue (#13), Baltimore Avenue (#34) or Woodland Avenue (#11), (#36).

• These lines meet at 40th Street and then go underground. The important stops (to you) are 30th Street, City Hall and 13th Street/Juniper Street (end of the line) stations. You will come upon them in that order. To get back to the University from Center City, take the 11, 13, 34 or 36 trolley to 42nd Street. Do not take the 10 trolley.

• There is a Spruce Street bus (#42) that runs directly to Center City and the #40 that runs directly to South Street/Penn’s Landing. Board at 40th & Spruce Streets.
